20th - 22nd July 2018 - 54th Avon Valley Trap Carnival
The Northam & Districts Gun Club held the 54th annual Avon Valley Trap Carnival over the weekend of 20th – 22nd July 2018. The carnival attracts competitors from all over WA keen to test their skills against some of the states best shooters. Clay target shooting brings together all ages and both genders to compete equally together. The youngest competitor this weekend was just 15 years old and the oldest well into the 80’s. Friday afternoons competition was a 60-target medley. AA grade Greg Jackson won the overall high gun sash with a score of 98/100. Grade high gun top scores - Vince Oliveri and Nick Haynes 97/100 in AA grade, Jay Waterhouse 97/100 in A grade, Sue Kamo and Eric Featherstone 93/100 in B Grade and Craig Hildred 86/100 in C Grade. Saturday saw the start of the high gun program. The high gun events had an added bonus this year with return flight tickets to the National Championships in Roma QLD next year going to the overall winner and the ladies winner. The weather forecast affected nomination numbers but 50 competitors took to the field to shoot the events. The opening event was a 30-target medley. Four competitors shot a perfect score of 50/50. After the shoot off to decide places Jason Oliveri came out on top again shooting a perfect score. AA grade went to Jim West, A Grade to Glen Rush who also shot a perfect 50/50, B Grade to Sue Kamo 49/50 and C Grade to Craig Hildred 43/50. The weekends premier event, the Roy Holtfreter Memorial Trophy was then contested over 100 targets double barrel. This event honours former life member Roy Holtfreter who was a founding member of the Northam club and who held positions at the State Association and was the National President at the Australian Clay Target Association. After a long afternoon of competition three competitors finished on 99/100 and required another shoot off to decide the winner. The shoot off went to 61 targets before a clear winner was declared. Jason Oliveri won the shoot off to take the high gun trophy. AA Grade was won by Tony Burnard 99/100, A Grade by Stephen Gee 97/100, B Grade by Eddie Wear 95/100 and C Grade by Craig Hildred on 90/100. Mrs Kath Holtfreter presented the high gun sash to Jason who proudly announced this was his 3rd win of the Roy Holtfreter trophy. Mrs Holtfreter sponsored the overall Ladies high gun which was won by Sandra Moffat with a score of 93/100. Sunday morning started with event 4, a 15 target continental points score. This event was a graded cash divide with AA grade jointly won by Stefan Coligiuri and Jason Oliveri with a perfect 45/45, A grade was won by Stephen Gee also a perfect 45/45, B Grade Russell King with 42/45 and C Grade Craig Hildred 35/45. Event 5 was a much sought after WA State Title event 50 target continental single barrel event. Jason Oliveri again showed his total domination winning the WA State Title with a perfect score of 50/50. AA Grade was won by Stefan Coligiuri with 48/50, A Grade Peter Appleton with 45/50, B Grade Eric Featherstone 41/50 and C Grade Craig Hildred on 36/50. Event 6 was the final event of the weekend, a 50-target handicap event. The handicap meterage had competitors shooting from the 15 metre mark for C Grade back to the 21 to 25 metre mark for the AA grade shooters. This event was won by Northam member Russell King from B Grade off 17 metres with a great score of 49/50. Runner up was Eric Featherstone also of B Grade, 17 metres, on 48/50 from a shoot off with Kevin Holden, A Grade off 19 metres also 48/50. The trophy presentations were held after the final shot with Northam’s Club Secretary Nick Haynes presenting the trophies to all winners. Also, the trap boys Cameron, Tom and Dylan for keeping the target traps running all weekend. The 54th carnival ran extremely smoothly and was again a success in attracting top quality shooters to Northam and bringing in at least $25,000 valuable tourist dollars to the town.
